Angel Reese’s WNBA Rookie of the Year candidacy is over in the eyes of Jason Whitlock, who insisted ‘no serious person’ should have her in the running for the award.
Whitlock, who began this season as a staunch critic of the Chicago Sky rookie, previously softened his stance and said she was ‘legitimizing’ her case for the honor.
However, after Reese struggled to the tune of a 3-13 shooting day in a loss vs. the New York Liberty on Saturday, Whitlock has done another U-turn.
‘Never again,’ he wrote on X. ‘No serious person should ever again discuss Angel Reese as rookie of the year. She’s just too unskilled offensively. She struggles to make layups. She’s a nice rebounder. She’s not an ‘all star.’ She’s being used as a gimmick to diminish Clark.
He continued, ‘Reese played 36 minutes and had zero impact. The double-double gimmick ended today because Reese missed too many point-blank layups. It’s not just one bad game. She shoots an incredibly low percentage from 3-4 feet.’
Angel Reese struggled from the floor as the Chicago Sky lost to the New York Liberty 81-67
And Jason Whitlock believes it’s time to remove her from Rookie of the Year discussions
Reese finished Saturday’s loss to the Liberty with eight points and 16 rebounds as the Sky fell 81-67.
She was also a -13 in 36 minutes.
Notably, Reese’s historic streak of 15 games with a double-double came to an end as the Liberty players quadruple-teamed her in the dying seconds of the game, forcing her to pass the ball away.
The Sky are now 9-14 on the season, and have lost to the Liberty twice in the last three days.
Reese has immediately shown herself to be an elite rebounder at the pro level but hasn’t shot the ball efficiently, as she was at just 41.1 percent from the field on the season entering Saturday’s game.
Nonetheless, her double-double streak had opened the eyes of Whitlock and he had previously changed his tone regarding the No. 7 overall pick.

Caitlin Clark is seen as the favorite for Rookie of the Year due to her play with the Fever
‘Angel Reese is legitimizing her case for rookie of the year, doesn’t mean I think she should be rookie of the year,’ Whitlock said. ‘But someone’s gotta finish second, and Angel Reese is making a case for second place.’
‘And if you’re making a case for second place, that means you have a chance to make a case for first place,’ Whitlock added. ‘And as long as Caitlin Clark is turning the ball over the way she is, and shooting poorly from 3-point range the way she is, she is leaving the door slightly ajar for someone else to come in here.’
Clark, meanwhile is stuffing the stat sheet with 16.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and 7.8 assists per night for the Indiana Fever.
