The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were reported to only hear of the Princess of Wales’ cancer diagnosis with the rest of the world when a public video message was shared on Friday

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ‘s short message to the Princess of Wales after her cancer diagnosis would have been appreciated, but aroyal expert claims the pair’s return to the UK would be a ‘distraction’.

Princess Catherine of Wales revealed her cancer diagnosis on Friday, with the young mother-of-three announcing the news to the world at 6pm GMT on Friday (March 22) in a moving video. Since her update the world has shared messages of support and hope for her recovery, with Meghan and Harry also sharing a short statement. Harry and Meghan, who are believed to be somewhat estranged from the Waleses, were alleged to have found out about their sister-in-law’s health when the rest of the world did, with them reportedly kept in the dark until the global announcement.

Royal biographer and historian Hugo Vickers has praised the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for their response to Kate’s news, but has urged that they would be best to stay put in California rather than return to the UK which would be ‘distracting’.

Vickers praised the message from Harry and Meghan as ‘lovely’, but said the news is unlikely to see William and Harry reunited as he explained in an interview: “I don’t think that’s on the cards at the moment to be honest. There’s an awful lot of things that have to happen before that is a possibility. I think that would just be a nasty distraction I think.”

In the wake of the news that the Princess of Wales has cancer and is undergoing treatment, Meghan and Harry released an official statement which read: “We wish health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace.”

Public relations guru Lynn Carratt from Press Box PR also revealed that the short message and only finding out with the public shows the damage and the rift between Harry and William, which shows no sign of mending.

“There is nothing like an illness in a family to bring them closer together. It was reported that Harry and Meghan only found out about Kate’s cancer at the same time as the rest of the world, which shows how wide the gulf between the Sussex’s and the Waleses is at the moment,” Lynn exclusively told The Mirror.

She added: “I am sure Harry, in particular, will be devastated by the news of Kate’s illness. Before his marriage to Meghan, he was very close to her and use to refer to her as the sister he never had. He will also be worried for his brother William who as well as supporting his wife, he is having to deputise for his father who is also undergoing treatment for cancer.”
