Liverpool no longer has the Premier League title in its own grasp, after a disappointing draw at Old Trafford. But it remains level on points at the top of the table, with everything still very much to play for over the next few weeks.
The dropped points at Manchester United were once again down to profligacy, leading many to take a renewed interest in when Diogo Jota will be fit to return. In especially clinical form before his untimely injury, the forward has been missed, and could yet play a telling part in the remainder of the campaign.
He is one of a number of big Liverpool stars who have spent a significant amount of time on the sidelines recently. Klopp is still without Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alisson as well, plus long-term casualties like Thiago and Joël Matip.
Meanwhile, Ibrahima Konaté was an unused substitute against Manchester United, with many pointing to the heavy tackle he suffered against Sheffield United as a potential reason for Klopp exercising caution. But he will be available for selection moving forward. Here’s when we can expect everyone else to be back.
Diogo Jota and Trent Alexander-Arnold
There was initially some optimism that Jota and Alexander-Arnold might be able to return for the Manchester United match after Klopp gave a best-case scenario timescale that involved the pair returning a week after the international break. But neither made the squad for that game, and it has to be said that they were missed.
Fortunately, their comebacks should not be far away. Klopp confirmed ahead of the United game that they will be returning to parts of team training this week, meaning they should be ready to play a part in the run-in. Possible return dates: April 14 vs Crystal Palace if training this week goes well.
Alisson Becker
Initially harboring a worse prognosis than the likes of Jota and Alexander-Arnold, the latest indications are that Alisson could return at around the same time. Klopp said that the Brazilian is working with the goalkeeping coaches, and has it ‘in his mind’ that he could also resume parts of team training this week.
Caoimhín Kelleher has been an able deputy, and Liverpool will not want to rush Alisson’s return. But he could also play an important role before the season is out. Possible return date: April 14 vs Crystal Palace.
Stefan Bajčetić
For so long lumped in the ‘unknown return’ category, it seems Bajčetić is edging closer. Rejoining first-team training won’t necessarily mean he is thrust into competitive action, with just seven league games to play, but he is closing in on being an option for Klopp once again.
The manager has revealed that Bajčetić is in full under-21s training, and will step up to the senior squad this week if all goes to plan. Klopp hailed his impending return as ‘super-important’. Possible return date: Mid-April.
Thiago, Joël Matip and Ben Doak
Klopp recently confirmed that ‘the season isn’t long enough’ for Matip to make a return. However, the center-back is now pain-free and back running.
Matip is expected to leave the club at the end of the season. So too is Thiago, meaning both might well have played their last games for Liverpool. However, in the case of the Spanish midfielder, that hasn’t been confirmed; he may yet regain fitness before the end of the campaign, although whether Klopp would choose to use him at such a vital juncture is another question.
By contrast, Doak has most of his long career ahead of him, but is also expected to sit out the remainder of the campaign with a long-term injury. He will aim to be fully fit in order to impress Klopp’s successor in pre-season. Possible return dates: End of season
