American Idol on Sunday started off with a performance that had the internet divided.
The top 10 performed songs from the year they were born. They were mentored this week by country legend Shania Twain before performing live in front of an audience and the judges – Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan.
Mia Matthews kicked off the show singing No One Needs to Know by Shania herself. The singer was starstruck when she met the iconic country singer, and it appeared that she continued to be star-struck as she forgot the words during the latter half of the song but she was able to get back on track.

After the performance, Luke said she reminded him of country singer Kelsea Ballerini. He then said he enjoyed it even if “I know you may have forgotten the words a couple of times.”
“Nobody needed to know that.” Katy chimed in. “She was acting so well and you blew her spot. Besides every Shania fan in the world, no one knew.”
Lionel joined in on the ribbing and said: “How could you do that, Luke? That was just terrible.” He then praised Mia, adding: “The crowd did not come to rehearsal so people like Luke don’t gotta tell you that you messed up.”
“Don’t worry, Luke. It was so obvious,” one fan wrote about the interaction on social media. Another added: “Katy, EVERYONE knew she forgot the words.”
After the judges’ comments, host Ryan Seacrest approached Mia and asked her what she was feeling when she couldn’t find the lyrics. “Just keep going,” she said.

Besides Mia forgetting the words, some fans online chastised her song choice. With the theme being songs from your year of birth, and No One Needs to Know coming out in 1995, fans were confused.
“Sooo this song didn’t come out in 2004 though,” one fan wrote on Twitter, now X. Another added: “Mia was not born that year. She was born in 2004. Wrong song choice for her.”
After Mia’s performance, the rest of the Top 10 performed. Jack Blocker sang Believe by Cher; Mckenna Faith Breinholt sang Iris by The Goo Goo Dolls; and Kayko was originally supposed to sing Oops I Did It Again by Britney Spears, but changed it at the last second to Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus.
Then Emmy Russell sang All The Small Things by Blink 182; Tristan Harper sang She’s Country by Jason Aldean; Abi Carter sang Clocks by Coldplay; Julia Gagnon sang Here I Am by Bryan Adams; Will Moseley sang Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde by Travis Tritt; and Kaibrienne finished the show singing Here Without You By 3 Doors Down.
At the end of the night, Ryan announced that the live votes had been counted and Mia and Kayko were sent home.
