LeBron James has advanced past the first round just twice in six years as a Los Angeles Lakers player, one of which resulted in his fourth NBA championship in 2020

NBA analyst Tim Legler believes LeBron James needs to sign for an Eastern Conference team in free agency for an easier route to the NBA Finals.

James, 39, has spent all but the last six seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers playing in the East. After reaching the Finals eight straight years between 2011 and 2018, he has done so only once since signing for the Lakers and moving out West.

Aside from also reaching the conference finals last season, James has not made it out of the first round in the other four seasons. The team did not even make the playoffs in his first and fourth years and has not finished higher than the No. 7 seed since topping the Western Conference in 2020.

James can enter free agency this offseason by deciding against opting into a $51.4 million player option for the upcoming season. He has not been a free agent since signing for the Lakers in 2018, but Legler believes becoming one is his best bet to win another championship.

“Here’s the difficult part for the Lakers right now,” he said Thursday during an appearance on “Get Up.” “Everything we said about LeBron and A.D. [Anthony Davis] still being, you know, very close to the top of their game is absolutely true.

“The problem is this, that organization, and those two players in particular, they’re just not going to have the same importance placed upon the regular season.

“And as a result, in the Western Conference, it means trying to dig yourself out of these holes. They’re going to be a play-in-ish team if those guys are back there again next year.

“And that’s just not good enough in the West because you already have [the Denver Nuggets] to deal with. You also have young teams that are just going to get better in [the Minnesota Timberwolves], [the Oklahoma City Thunder] and [the Dallas Mavericks].

“All three of those teams with young superstars and a core around them that you know is going to improve, the fringes are going to improve. So, short of getting some superstar free agent or somebody that demands a trade that comes to L.A., which is all hypothetical.

“I don’t know how the Lakers improve the margins of their roster to be able to compete with what the top of the West looks like. That’s the problem for LeBron James.

“His best bet [if] he wants to win again, honestly, would be to go to one of those teams in the Eastern Conference, [the Philadelphia 76ers], [the New York Knicks] at the top of the list. That would be his best shot because it’s a path of least resistance in the Eastern Conference.”

The 76ers have cap space to sign James to a max contract this summer with nearly $60 million available. The Knicks would likely require a sign-and-trade to acquire James, but the team has plenty of assets to include.
