It looks like Caitlin Clark’s former coach has broken her silence about the young superstar being snubbed from the Olympics. Plus, we’ve got an Olympic boycott update regarding the ratings. For this one, we have to go all the way to the Paris Olympics.
Dawn Staley’s comments are currently going viral about possibly making a mistake by not including Caitlin Clark on the team. Many people might try to deny it, but just like Dawn Staley said, if they knew then what they know now, Caitlin Clark would have been on the team. Caitlin Clark’s fans knew all along that she was the real deal on the basketball court.
Clark’s former high school coach has also spoken out. It’s reported that Chrisy Mayer, Clark’s high school basketball coach, sent her a text reminding her that this wasn’t the first time she was left off a USA roster despite trying out. In 2018, as a high school sophomore, Clark tried out for the U17 World Cup USA squad and was expected to make the team after helping them qualify in the summer of 2017. Despite performing well, she wasn’t chosen, which Mayer found surprising.
Fast forward to the next year, Clark was invited to try out for the U19 World Championship squad. At 17, she was among the youngest on the court but made the team with an improved game. Two years later, she was invited back to the U19 team after her freshman season at Iowa, where she averaged 26 points per game. Team USA won gold, and Clark scored a team-high 14 points per game.
Clark’s former coach recalled that when she didn’t make the Olympic team this year, she encouraged her to adopt the same mindset she had years ago. This reveals a pattern of Clark being snubbed, suggesting a hidden agenda against her from the start.
Now, onto the Olympic boycott update. The opening ceremony ratings are in, and they are shocking. Despite talks of a boycott, NBC reported that the opening day of Olympic competition delivered the best ratings since 2016. A total of 32 million viewers tuned in, an 83% increase from the Tokyo Olympics’ opening day. The opening ceremony itself brought in 28.6 million viewers, the most since the London Olympics in 2012.
NBC took a different strategy this year by bringing in celebrities like Snoop Dogg to co-host and boost ratings. Despite the criticism, it appears people are still watching the Olympics, and the boycott doesn’t seem to be having the intended effect.
