While many men’s basketball stars openly support the WNBA, not all do. Not known for speaking in language, Gilbert Arenas also released a scathing tirade on the subject during his latest podcast.
It’s a fact, women’s basketball has never enjoyed such enormous media exposure as it does now.
WNBA games are regularly sold out, jersey sales are exploding… and all of this is partly thanks to the exceptional 2024 draft class led by Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese.
On paper, we could say that everything is going well for the American League. but the reality is very different since if the gems attract a huge audience, they do the same with the controversies
. Clark in particular is not having a quiet start to the season: it is rumored that her elders have targeted her because of her colossal hype and accusations of anti-white racism are flying in all directions.
Gilbert Arenas cash on controversies in the WNBA
To make matters worse, her non-selection for the 2024 Olympic Games also made many observers shout, where some WNBA stars believe that she has not yet shown enough to join Team USA.
Add to that Reese who was very harsh towards CC and that’s a lot… As a result, Gilbert Arenas wanted to send an extremely clear message to the players on his podcast.
We try to reduce it all to these two girls when in the end, it’s the whole vintage that has a target on its back. (Clark) just has a bigger target, but if you think they don’t judge Angel Reese on the court…
They do it because the news is in magazines, (Reese) was at the Met Gala. the girls before them didn’t have the chance to do that.
When we sit here and try to applaud their success, why would we support them if they don’t accept that?
They want to keep the door closed, “she doesn’t deserve this”, “she doesn’t have to do that”.
Does (Clark) deserve to be on the team? The answer is no, no one is saying she deserves it on principle, that’s not the question.
The question should instead be: do you all deserve more recognition?
Do you all deserve better jersey sales? If the answer is yes, no one is paying attention to your work ethic and you want attention, these girls help with that. (…) You are fighting against yourselves.
For Gilbert Arenas, there is no point for veteran players to blame newcomers just because they benefit from more privilege. The fact is that they allow the WNBA to thrive more than ever, which will only benefit future generations.
