Victor Wembanyama sets the bar high for the French national team in the Olympics despite the presence of the US
The anticipation for the Olympic basketball tournament is palpable, with the draw now official.
For Victor Wembanyama, who is on the brink of his senior national team debut in a major tournament, there’s a singular focus: securing gold for France on home soil.
In a recent conversation with French media from San Antonio, Wembanyama left no room for ambiguity: anything short of first place would be deemed a failure.
“Any other result than the first place would be a failure since we could have done better,” he asserted, underlining the team’s unwavering commitment to excellence.
“You shouldn’t have any regrets but it’s a very achievable goal.”
His confidence in the team’s ability to clinch the top spot is unwavering.
“I much prefer to face their best team than their second or third team.
Facing them in the final or the group stage for me, it’s the same,”
Wembanyama remarked, displaying a steely resolve regardless of the opposition.
Regarding the draw, which placed France in a group alongside Germany, Japan, and the winner of the qualifying tournament in Latvia, the Spurs rookie acknowledged the potential challenges ahead.
“We have a group which is a potential trap.
But these are the Olympics: if we want to go far, we will inevitably have to play against the big guys,” he observed pragmatically, recognizing the demanding nature of the tournament.
Having missed out on the recent World Cup, Wembanyama is determined to make his mark on the Olympic stage.
“I have an idea of the mark I want to leave.
I want to make history with big goals and soon with big achievements,”
he declared ambitiously, highlighting his aspirations for personal and team success.
With Wembanyama expected to play a pivotal role as a starter alongside NBA veterans Rudy Gobert, Nicolas Batum, and Evan Fournier, France is poised to rebound from their disappointing performance in the previous FIBA World Cup.
Despite their early exit from the group stage, they are regarded as strong contenders for a medal at the Olympics.
As the countdown to the Games begins, the question remains: can France secure the ultimate prize?
Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: with Victor Wembanyama leading the charge, they will stop at nothing to reach the pinnacle of Olympic glory.
