Saturday’s matinee matchup between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever was one of the biggest events on the day’s sports calendar, and the game earned a prime spot on ESPN’s SportsCenter.
The show opened with highlights from the game at 5 PM on Saturday, but failed to mention one of the biggest stories from the matchup.
The Sky’s Chennedy Carter pushed the Fever’s Caitlin Clark to the floor in the third quarter in a play some have called a “cheap shot.”
Discussion of the play has been all over social media on Saturday, with fans reacting and debating the foul.
During SportsCenter, not only was the foul not mentioned, the entire third quarter appeared to be omitted from the show-opening highlight package.
ESPN anchor Nicole Briscoe mentioned “some drama in the WNBA” before getting to the highlight.
After the segment got through halftime, Briscoe said “forget about the 3rd, doesn’t matter, didn’t happen,” despite the controversial play with Carter dominating the headlines.
The segment was completely revised for SportsCenter’s next airing at 6 PM, and there were even on-screen graphics to point Carter and Clark out on the floor when the foul happened.
The anchors also mentioned Angel Reese appearing to celebrate Carter’s foul on Clark from the bench.
“Reese obviously seems to like the energy, if you will,” Briscoe said.
“Fair enough,” Mark Eaves replied.
The play is another example of the physicality Clark has faced early in her WNBA career.
Teams haven’t been shy about making her uncomfortable on the court, but many felt that Carter’s foul on Saturday was uncalled for.
We’ll see if there is any discipline for Carter from the controversial play, but the Fever were able to get the final say as they took home the victory in a tense game on Saturday
