Halfway through her first season in the WNBA, Angel Reese has built up an impressive streak of double-doubles. While many have applauded the feat, fans had a field day after the Chicago Sky’s coach’s recent comments.
In the midst of her 15-game double-double steak, some have accused Reese of hunting stats to keep her run alive. Following their latest matchup, Teresa Weatherspoon addressed this narrative. She feels Reese is just playing hard every night trying to help her team win.
“She’s not out there for records,” Weatherspoon said. “She’s out there for wins.”
After Weatherspoon’s defense of Angel Reese, fans flooded social media with reactions. One account claimed she has a great poker face.
I really respect TSpoon for her ability to say this with a straight face
Must be a hell of a poker player https://t.co/midgmnTSfE

I agree that Reese plays hard. I'm not sure anyone could make an argument against that with any logic. But not out there for records? Like how do you say that so deadpan? That's some kind of Kawhi, Any Kaufman level performance.

😂 the fact she said that with a straight face is crazy. Maybe some ppl aren’t watching the games but those of us who are have seen multiple games where y’all have put that record before the win

Other fans brought up Weatherspoon’s substitution patterns with Reese as claim she wants to keep the streak going.
“Cordosa being benched for the entire 4th quarter only down 1 and subbing in only after angel hit her double double, now down 12 suggests otherwise.” One fan said.
“benching Cardoso for Reese stat padding is SHAMELESS,” another fan said.
“Cardoso leading the team in rebounds going into the 4th but Angel Reese doesn’t have double digit boards yet so they sat Cardoso the entire fourth. Reese gets her 10th board Cardoso goes back in the game with a minute left. Can’t make this up man,” said one fan.
Angel Reese’s recent actions suggest she cares about her double-double streak
Weatherspoon might say that Angel Reese only cares about winning games, but her recent actions suggest her streak is important to her. In the Chicago Sky’s last matchup, she went out of her way to make sure she broke double-digits in scoring.
On Wednesday night, the Sky took on the Atlanta Dream. In the final 10 seconds, Chicago found themselves with the ball up seven points. Typically, the winning team would just dribble the ball out. However, the Sky ended up dumping the ball to Reese in the post.
Angel Reese managed to draw a foul with six seconds left. She went to the line and made both, getting her up to 11 points for the game. Without his play, her double-double streak would have come to an end.
Seeing that the Sky were already on their way to a victory, it’s clear the streak was important in this moment. Because of situations like this, narratives have formed around Reese stat-padding to keep her run of double-doubles alive.
Nonetheless, Reese should still be applauded for her historic run as a rookie. In her first year as a pro, she is showing the potential to be productive on both ends of the floor. Through her first 22 games, Reese is leading the WNBA in rebounds per game at 11.8.
