Angel Reese took more of the headlines in what has been a stellar campaign from an individual perspective, but she ended up on the losing side. Her 15th consecutive double-double was not enough to deny the New York Liberty from claiming an impressive win, with Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones coming to the fore at the Barclays Center.
Angel Reese extended her WNBA double-double record to 15 games, but it was not enough to stop the New York Liberty powering past the Chicago Sky with a 91-76 victory.
Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones scored 21 and 18 points respectively, while the latter also claimed 13 rebounds on a memorable evening.
Chennedy Carter led the way for Chicago with 22 points, but it was not enough to prevent them from succumbing to a 13th defeat of the season.
The Sky were left to rue what may have been after moving into a 37-24 lead halfway through the second quarter, but the Liberty were breathing down their necks after bringing the score back to 40-38 at half-time.
The momentum of the match ultimately swayed in New York’s favour when they moved 68-66 ahead in the fourth quarter, before going on a 7-2 run to create more daylight between the two teams.
The match was played in front of a record Liberty crowd at the Barclays Center, with 17,758 fans packed inside the arena.
“They love women’s sports,” Reese said in quotes published by wnba.com. “Just being able to go in this direction and continue to strive for great things. You never know the limit here. So many records have been broken, not just with me, but so many different players in this league.”
It has been a jam-packed schedule for both teams, who were playing the second matches in as many days.
The Sky came into this match after overcoming Atlanta Dream, while the Liberty won away at the Connecticut Sun.
Ionescu grew into the contest after missing her first seven shots in a poor start, and would make a telling contribution to tie the match at 38-38.
She added: “I was just trusting the looks – I was getting good looks at the basket, they were just long.
“I was driving and getting into the pick-and-roll with [Jonquel], which was beneficial for us in the fourth quarter.”
