Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark’s Olympics omission is still causing ripples in the national media.

The decision is not one that Stephen A. Smith would make. He voiced as much on ESPN’s “First Take.”

Among other things, Smith believes that while the 12 players on the roster are deserving, Clark’s presence could amplify the power of the women’s basketball brand.

ESPN basketball analyst Andraya Carter disagreed with the notion, believing players should be chosen based on merit. Stephen A. challenged back with a response on what he believes to be the reality of the situation.

“Marketing matters. It’s how you get paid. If you don’t know that, you better hear me, and hear me good. I am telling you right now, you are going to be underpaid for the rest of what I believe will be an illustrious career unless you get your mind right about that marketing. It matters.”

Smith’s admission was eye opening in several respects, but the biggest takeaway is that he might even consider placing Clark over players he views as more deserving.

Ultimately, Smith believes the importance of marketing can surpass other factors. It adds another layer to what is becoming one of the biggest discussions in sports.
