Caitlin Clark is one of the biggest sensations in the WNBA, and in this game, she showed exactly why by breaking a franchise record in just her first season. If she continues to play like this, the future holds incredible potential for her.
The Mercury won the tip-off, and the game was ready to go. Caitlin Clark wasted no time making her mark. She immediately set up a screen and roll, usually looking to get her teammates involved before shooting. However, this time she opened the quarter with a bucket from downtown. Cooper responded quickly, scoring off the pick and roll with a nice hesitation move. But from this point on, the game would belong to Clark, who was about to have a franchise quarter for the Fever.
First, Clark manipulated the pick and roll to score off the glass. Then, she started dishing out assists from all over the floor in various forms. She began with an inbounds pass to Mitchell, followed by a pick and roll pass to Boston for a short roll jumper. She found Mitchell again on the fast break for an easy two points, and we were just getting started. The Mercury defense tried to force Clark to go right, but she stayed patient and found the cutting Mitchell for yet another assist. She also demonstrated her vision in the full-court game, throwing a perfect pass to Mitchell once again, earning her seventh assist in the first quarter, a franchise record.
On the other side, the Mercury had little to show besides some plays from Brittney Griner, who displayed her ability to both score and find the open shooter when doubled. Allen had a few strong finishes, attacking the paint off the pick and roll and finding her bigs for open jumpers. By the end of the first quarter, the Fever were up 28-20.
In the second quarter, Griner tried to inspire a comeback, showcasing her footwork and hitting a tough layup with a step-through move. However, Clark and her teammates continued to dominate. After an impressive quarter of passing and facilitating, Clark decided to take matters into her own hands, focusing on scoring. She showed her toughness by bullying her defender to the rim, seeking contact, and making the layup. She also demonstrated her craftiness with a variety of dribble moves, putting defenders on skates at will.
Clark continued to shine in the pick and roll, either passing the ball or driving to the hoop herself. She finished with a bucket plus a foul, hitting the free throw to add to her tally. By halftime, the Fever were up by 20 points, with Clark having 15 points and nine assists.
Sophie Cunningham provided a highlight for the Mercury, breaking her defender’s ankles and nailing a three-pointer. After the break, the Mercury aimed to cut the lead, but Clark and Boston had other plans. Clark continued to attack, hitting a three-pointer over a big defender who was sagging off. Boston showed her fight by grabbing offensive rebounds and scoring on second chances.
Clark continued to distribute the ball effectively, reaching her 10th assist with a beautiful pass to Mitchell. She showcased her handles with a behind-the-back and between-the-legs combo, scoring another basket. Despite some efforts from Cooper and Harrian, the Fever maintained their lead, finishing the third quarter up by 23 points.
The Mercury, however, showed resilience. Cooper led a spirited comeback, attacking the rim, shooting well from mid-range, and scoring in transition. They managed to cut the Fever’s lead to just four points with a little over three minutes left. Harrian and Cunningham also contributed significantly to this run.
Clark, however, remained calm and composed. She delivered two crucial assists in the closing moments, finding teammates in the low post and throwing a skip pass to Mitchell to ice the game. The Fever secured another win, with Clark finishing the game with 20 points, 13 assists, and six rebounds, having a career night.
Although the Mercury came close in the fourth quarter, they stood no chance against the Fever, especially with Clark playing at this level.
