With so much going on in the Timberwolves’ camp, there is a lot to unpack and make sense of. Despite their ongoing ownership dispute between the Marc Lore-Alex Rodriguez duo and majority owner Glen Taylor, the Wolves have not slowed down in their pursuit of building a title contending team for next year. Keeping that in mind, they might have quietly made a Stephen Curry-esque move in the draft last night when they made a trade with the Spurs to acquire their 8 pick Rob Dillingham. At least that is what a highly impressed Draymond Green believes.
While Dillingham was still on the stage soaking in his moment after getting drafted by the Spurs, the Wolves finalized a deal to acquire the rookie in exchange for a 2030 protected pick swap and a 2031 unprotected first round pick. Addressing the trade on The Draymond Green Show, the Warriors veteran deemed it the move of the night, “Who won the draft for me was the Minnesota Timberwolves.”
Claiming that most teams were afraid to select Dillingham because he is an undersized 6’1 guard and plays a certain way that might not fit their system, Draymond believed that the decision could haunt them in the future, “There is gonna be some teams that’s gonna regret passing Rob Dillingham because he’s the best pure scorer in that draft.” Despite his small frame, Rob averaged 15.2 points for Kentucky in his freshman year while coming off the bench in every game except one. Being the second highest scorer on his team, he was also named the SEC Sixth man of the Year.

How does Rob Dillingham fit with the Wolves?
As Lore and A-Rod’s legal battle continues with Glenn Taylor after the latter voided the $1.5 billion deal from three years ago and stopped the sale of his majority stake to the duo, Lore and Rodriguez recently joined forces with billionaire Michael Bloomberg in their pursuit of taking control of the Timberwolves franchise. While the dispute adds chaos behind the scenes, the addition of Rob Dillingham could bring some relief for them.
Although the Wolves have built a solid core around their young superstar Anthony Edwards, who even led the team to the Conference finals this year, they were in desperate need of a solid guard for next season. That’s because their primary point guard Mike Conley will be 37YO in October and might not be able to perform at an elite level for very long. But with Dillingham on board, the Wolves do not have to worry about that issue anymore because the nineteen-year-old can take over Conley’s role whenever needed.
Apart from being a prolific scorer, Dillingham is also an elite three-point shooter just like Conley. During his time at Kentucky, he shot a whopping 44.4% from deep range. On top of that, he has the ability to create his own shots in different ways. Missouri head coach Dennis Gates called Rob “the best isolation player in college basketball.” Moreover, with a running mate like Edwards, they could soon turn into one of the most lethal scoring duos in the league. So, the Wolves might have hit the jackpot by picking up Rob Dillingham in this draft. Do you agree?
