‘It was surreal’: Fever fans describe witnessing Caitlin Clark’s historic triple-double +VIDEO

You can always tell when it’s a home game day for the Indiana Fever because downtown Indianapolis gets flooded with the number 22.

“Just go down the street, you’re seeing 22 shirts everywhere,” Jason Fegett, a fan from Louisville, said.

That number can be seen of the back of point guard Caitlin Clark’s jersey every time the Fever suit up for a game.

“I’m really happy I got to see her today,” Lennon Dykens, a fan from Iowa, said. “It was like a dream come true.”

Clark’s star power was on full display Saturday against the New York Liberty. Clark made history, becoming the first rookie in WNBA history to record a triple-double.

“It’s historic,” Nathaniel Dykens, a fan from Iowa, said. “We’re pretty big Iowa fans, so we’ve been watching her for years. It was great to see her live.”

“It was pretty surreal,” said Andy Dangler, a fan from Chicago. “We were watching TV the game before it, and she got really close to it, I think she was like a couple of rebounds away. I didn’t think I’d actually be at the first one, but here we are.”

“It felt really exciting that my favorite basketball player made her first triple-double,” Anastyn Dangler, a fan from New York, said.

“We’ve been following her since last season with Iowa,” Jason Fegett said. “But seeing her do what she did on the court today, that was actually amazing.”

Not to mention, the Caitlin Clark effect is changing the game overall.

“What she has done for the sport of basketball, and what she’s done for women’s sports period is amazing,” Lauren Hoard, a fan from Louisville, said.

“The WNBA — the professional league — it’s growing amazing,” said Christian Fegett, a fan from Louisville. I just can’t believe they’re selling out, and I love it, it’s awesome.”

Fans have been traveling across the country for Fever games. For some, it’s their first introduction to a feeling Hoosiers have known forever.

“There’s some kind of camaraderie,” Rachel Dangler, a fan from Chicago, said. “It feels electric, like something big is going to happen.”

“I’ve been enjoying watching Fever basketball since Tamika Catchings,” Angelo Reed, a fan from Indianapolis, said. “So, to have this uproar in the city again is very lovely.”

Fans are hoping for another exciting game on Wednesday when the Fever take on the Washington Mystics at noon at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
